KNOWLES, Charles Owen

ß ă Щ 21387 Pte  9 Bn N & D (he served prior to war). 568968 Pte 194 Coy Labour Corps.  (DC 21/10/1916; Ill in hospital).  (SDT 23/10/1916; has been invalided home and is now in a London hospital, suffering from septic poisoning). (HPN 16/12/1916; has come home to the Bungalow, (Newtown) Sheffield Road, after a long absence in Egypt and Salonica). (DC 22/2/1919 reports his discharge). b 1887 Bonsall, Derbyshire.  1911C living at The Bungalow, Hathersage, a gas fitter. Wife; Maggie.

KNIGHTON, Tomas Lindsay

(DC 31/8/1918; ‘A Roll of Honour of old scholars of the Hathersage Church of England School, who have joined the forces, has been designed by Master T Knighton, a former scholar. The roll consists of 80 names’).

(DC 22/2/1919; reported the ‘Death of 17 year old of Crossland Villas, Hathersage, eldest son of Mr & Mrs Thomas Knighton. He contracted influenza, which became pneumonia). He was probably a victim of the ‘flu pandemic. He was employed in the drawing office of Firths, Sheffield, a member of the Hathersage Volunteers, he may well be depicted front left rank of the photo, p 13 of WHW2W.  He was also a member of Hathersage Wesley Guild, and a former patrol leader of Hathersage Boy Scouts. b 1901 at Eastwood, Notts. 1911C living at Hunter House Road, Sheffield. Buried 21/2/1919 at Eastwood, Notts.

Although too young to serve in WW1, it is thought his story deserves recording. It is not known if the roll of honour has survived.

KING, Arthur Dobney

Lt Derbyshire Volunteers, Hathersage. (See notes below). (Belper News 6/8/1915 p4; Appointed Detachment Commandant, Hathersage Home Guards). (SDT 24/7/1916; The members 81st Section, 5th Battalion, West Derbyshire Volunteers, accompanied by the Hathersage Brass Band, attended service at Bamford Parish Church yesterday morning, in command of Detachment; Commandant Mr A D King. Died age 39, from influenza. (DC 23/11/1918 ‘given a Military funeral at Hathersage), when he lived at ‘Birchtrees’ (Jaggers Lane), Outseats. (DC 30/11/1918; ‘at the funeral of Lt Arthur Dobney King, were Sgt Taylor, Cpl Platts, L/Cpl Taylor, L/Cpl Mawhood, Privates Wood, Dalton, Spittlehouse and Mower). It is thought these could be the men in the picture in p 13 of ‘WHW2W.

b 1879 at Southampton, He married Jessie Mabel Roberts sister to Nima wife of Charles Anthes. 1876/1881 the Roberts family were living Moorseats, Hathersage. 1911C, living at ’Ashdene’ (Ninelands Road).  He worked at Barclays Bank, Sheffield. Most of the information came from the family.

KEETON, Annie

ă 1918 absent voters list; Sister in Charge, Longshaw Hospital, Hathersage. b 1874 North Leverton, Notts. 1911C living in Sheffield, a hospital nurse.

KAYE, James

He joined T.A. KOYLI in 1912 as 1722 Bugler, later Pte 240062 2/5 KOYLI. He was wounded three times.  b 1892 at Whitwood Mere, Castleford and became a coal miner. He was brother to George above. Their father James Kaye was b 1862 Hathersage, who on 1911C was at Whitwood Mere, Castleford, and seemed to have had a variety of names. On the 1871C in Hathersage he was shown as James Key, and listed under parents Joseph & Fanny Hickmon (actually ‘Hickinson’ and his mother was Frances Key, which suggests he may have been Illegitimate).

KAYE, George

✟ ≠ Pte 1719 2/5 KOYLI, D of W 29/5/1915, buried at Merville Communal Cemetery, and also remembered on the Whitwood War Memorial. b 1894 Whitwood, Castleford, and became a glass blower at Whitwood Mere. KAY (KEY) Harry (Henry?)
