PORDAGE, Frederick Clough Frankland.

P/5237 Act Sgt. Mounted Military Police. Born 19/1/1888, Karachi India (Now Pakistan). Enlisted in Southampton although living in Sheffield from May 1913, a constable in the local Police Force, and a member of the Army Reserve. Married Evelyn TIMPERLEY at All Saints Church, Brightside in Nov 1913. He presented himself for war service on 6/8/1914 & arrived in France on 16/8/1914 and remained there until the end of WW1, with occasional visits home to Sheffield to visit his wife & young son. Attached to 17th Lancers at one stage. (DT 25/1/1919 p4 states he was from Hathersage and awarded the Meritorious Service Medal). He could only have been there a short time, as after the war he found it difficult to settle, so he & his wife & young family emigrated to Australia in 1920, leaving behind their baby daughter in Burngreave Cemetery, Sheffield, taken by the Spanish Flu. In Australia, they initially settled on a Soldier Settlement farm, hoping to grow pineapples, but the scheme failed & the family lived through a time of destitution. They eventually got back on their feet & raised 7 children & were upstanding members of their church & community. There were eventually 120+ members of this family in Australia. Fred passed away in 1966 at Coolangatta, Australia, and Evelyn in 1972. (Most information provided by Jocelyn Abrahams, his granddaughter).
