BENTON, Eliza Unwin.

b 1867 Sheffield, (née Camm). b 1867 Sheffield. 1911C living at 3 Washington Road, Sheffield with spouse; James Edward Benton, and sister; Amy Beatrice Camm.

Red Cross records refer to her as Lilian Benton a night nurse at Hathersage VAD hospital. She also lived at Cannon Fields, Hathersage and was also referred to as ‘Lillie’ Benton in the death notice of her husband (Sheff Independent 14/2/1917). Her daughter Annie Benton, and her sister Amy Beatrice Camm were also nurses there, and her sister-in-law Jessica Payne Benton, was a night nurse there.

NEWTON/HIGGINSON, Percy.

(Known as Percy Higginson, before their father died, then as Percy Newton). Stoker First Class R.N. (SDT 27/4/1917;’Serving on HMS Broke, has two brothers fighting in France’). b1887 Leeds, Brother of Charles Newton/Higginson and Joseph Newton/Higginson, (and James Newton/Higginson, b1876 Hathersage, a police constable in Sheffield City Police, who did not serve in the forces),  sons of the late Thomas Francis (b1852 Hathersage, registered as ‘Higginson’ but baptised as ‘Newton’),) a Hackle Pin Grinder, and Martha Newton (née Barber, b 1854 Hathersage). In 1891C the family is called Higginson living in Leeds. In 1898 father Thomas Francis Newton dies in Sheffield, mother Martha does not remarry. The whole family appear on 1901C & 1911C in Sheffield, as ‘Newton’.

(Known as Joseph Higginson, before their father died, then as Joseph Newton). Pte 34294 Lincs Regt., 26879 Labour Corps, 94686 Royal Defence Corps. b1890 Leeds. 1911C 50 Fleet Street. Brother of Charles Newton/Higginson and Percy Newton/Higginson (and James Newton/Higginson, b1876 Hathersage, a police constable in Sheffield City Police, who did not serve in the forces.) sons of the late Thomas Francis (b1852 Hathersage, registered as ‘Higginson’ but baptised as ‘Newton’), a Hackle Pin Grinder, and Martha Newton (née Barber, b 1854 Castleton). In 1891C the family is called Higginson living in Leeds. In 1898 father Thomas Francis Newton dies in Sheffield, mother Martha does not remarry. MANNEER, Tom Wellington.

Lt., Cheshire Regt., in France from 20/12/1916. Capt., served in India, 63 Palmacollah L I, Indian Army after WW1. b 1898 Bovey Tracey, Devon, son of Rev Richard Wellington Menneers. Married May Rosamund Pawson of ‘Hillcrest’ Baslow on 18/9/1927 at Baslow. (1932, 1936 & 1941 Kelly’s living at ‘Ingleside’ Nether Padley).
