(HPN 16/12/1916; a ‘Pte Turner from Egypt/Salonica region is still in hospital’). b 1885 son of Henry & Hannah Turner 1881C & 1901C living at Besom Lane, Hathersage. 1911C family living at Oddfellows Terrace, Hathersage, but Willie was a coachman living at Darley Dale. He was the brother of Charles b1878, John b1884, and Harry b1892, (and Arthur, Herbert Fred, and Fred, none of whom appeared to serve although three siblings had died by C1911.) their sister Emma, married J P J Watts, (see below).

(DC18/11/1916 & DC 11/9/1917 he is listed as Ill in Hospital).  (DC 7/4/1917 ‘Gnr Turner RFA visited his Crossland Road home this week on 10 days sick leave after malaria fever. Until recently he was in a Worcester hospital. He has two older brothers serving with the colours’). His Medal list shows he only served in France.  b 1896 Hathersage, son of Thomas and Annie Turner of ‘The Meadows’, Crossland Road. Brother of Fred, Thomas Wilfred, and Albert (and Arthur who didn’t appear to serve?), Shown at 6 Crossland Road in 1919 voters register, and as having a Military vote.

25077 Pte. 3 Lincolnshire Regt, later transferred to 200707 Labour Corps. b 1888 Totley, son of Thomas & Annie Turner. 1911C he was a time keeper at Water Board, living ‘The Meadows’ 6 Crossland Road. Brother of Fred, Albert, William and Arthur (who didn’t appear to serve?) On enlisting he was living at Castleton Road, Hope.

✟ ≠  Pte 12/1609 2/4 Hallamshire Bn (T. F) Y & L.  He was a miner living in Thurcroft at time of his enlistment. GSW to Face 4/10/1916. Died of other wounds 2/10/1918, buried St Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen and remembered at Thurcroft War Memorial (but as Stenton Turner). b 1881 at Ashover. 1911C  a quarryman at Bamford. (DC 19/10/1918 p5 ‘Of Hathersage, he was terribly wounded and had lost both of his legs. He had been twice wounded previously. He leaves a widow and one child.) Married Elizabeth Wilson b 1882 Hathersage, whose family lived at Hathersage Booths. Her father John was also a quarry man.

✟ Щ  Enlisted Bakewell; TR6/13888 Pte 14 Bn Training Reserve, Notts & Derbys. Died 27/2/1917 age 18,. (from pneumonia per SDT 5/3/1917, where he is referred to as ‘John Turner Kitchen, who only enlisted a few weeks ago‘).

Son of the late G J Turner and S A M Turner of Sheffield.) b 1899 in Colombo, Ceylon. 1901C and at the time of his enlistment living at ‘Rock House’, Hathersage, nephew of Teresa Kitchen (head), together with his parents, George and Sarah Turner and brother George (also b 1900 Ceylon). Miss Theresa Winifred Kitchin, ‘Rock House’, Hathersage became his guardian after his father died before 1917. A relative was Mrs J Peck of 17 Avondale Road, Hazel Grove, Stockport.

(DC 8/6/1918 (age 41) Grade 3, greengrocer, granted 3 months exemption, as had his own business.  It is unlikely he would have been called up after that.  b1878 Hathersage, son of Henry (b 1852 d 1891) & Hannah Turner. 1881C & 1901C at Besom Lane, Hathersage. 1911C at Oddfellows Terrace, Hathersage. (DC 26/10/1918 ‘Gun Shot Wound to leg’).  b 1884 at Totley, son of Thomas and Annie Turner of ‘The Meadows’ (Crossland Road), Hathersage. Brother of Fred, Thomas, William (and Arthur who didn’t appear to serve), 1911C a railway labourer. His 1919 Voters register address, was still Crossland Road, with a military vote.

ă 200357 Cpl 1/4 Leicestershire Regt. b 1891 Sheffield. 1911C in Sheffield, a draper’s assistant.  On the 1918 absent voters list his address was ‘Rock Lea’, (Station Road,) Hathersage.
