b 1888 Hope Woodlands to parents John Webb (b Abney) & Sarah Alice Priestley (b Hathersage). 1901C living with grandparents at Abney Grange, 1911C living with father John at the ‘Pheasant Inn’, Sheffield Lane Top. According to family he emigrated to New Zealand without telling his father and enlisted at Hawkes Bay in 1916 with the New Zealand Forces. There is a Randolph Webb listed as serving but no more details, he got married in 1919 when he returned home. Half-brother of Arthur James above.

(known as ‘Frank’). ✟ Щ (He is incorrectly shown on the Hathersage War Memorial as ‘P Webb’ age 27). 40705 Pte 9 Bn Norfolk Regt. K.I.A. 23/4/1917 age 31. Grave; Vermelles British Cemetery, France,ref; 6-B-14. He also appears on another memorial somewhere according to the inscription on Hathersage War Memorial.  b1885, bap’t Hathersage Nov 1885.  Son of Ernest & Alice Webb of Hathersage. His family, Lewthwaites lived on Main Road, also related to Mrs M Wildsmith late of ‘Stonecroft’, Ninelands Road.  1901C living at Main Road near Besom Lane, Hathersage, a labourer in a steel wire works. 1911C he was a footman to Edward Simon Marcus (Stockbroker) living in Paddington, at 3 Ormes Court, Bayswater. He married Daisy Annie Bilson of 51 St Mary’s Road, Watford, Herts in 1915  and a son Frank Ernest was born in 1917, meaning James would never have seen him. The Webbs were a rather complicated family. There was a half-sister Mary Ann by his father Ernest’s first marriage, she lived with her grandparents at Abney Grange. James had three siblings; William Henry, Kate and Ernest (who died in Infancy). Following the death of his father in 1888 his mother Alice remarried in 1893 to a William Nicholson Lewthwaite, a labourer at Derwent Valley Water Board, and they had four daughters. Fox House which was originally named Fox’s House was a Shepherd’s stone hut.  The Shepherd being one George Fox who just happened to be the Great Grandfather of James Francis Webb.

Joins up in Yorks Regt in 1916. However 1/5/1918 was Court-Martialled; “when on Active Duty disobeying a lawful command by a superior officer“, a Conscientious Objector,  “Given 2 years imprisonment with hard labour. Sentence later commuted to 1 year. On 10/3/1919 Court-Martialled again for the same thing. On 17/6/1919 released and discharged from the Army.  Apparently Arthur James Webb was deeply religious which could account for his conscientious objections. b 1899 Derwent Hotel, Bamford, his father was John Webb b Abney, (Uncle to James Francis Webb below KIA). Mother was Carlotta. 1911C at the ‘Pheasant Inn’, Sheffield Lane Top. Half-brother of Randolph below.

Enlisted 1915 but failed his medical, remobilized Oct 1916, Pte D L I., 10 Scots Fusiliers and finally 19422 Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, based in Ireland.  b 1882 Spondon, Derbys.  A hawker he married Emma Turner b 1880 Hathersage in 1916. Her family was of Herbert Henry & Hannah Turner. 1911C Oddfellows Terrace, Hathersage.

ß Was in 2 Volunteer Bn Notts & Derbys, before enlisting on a short service with the Territorial Force  in July 1915. Assigned to various units and numbers. Served in France from 15/6/1917 to 15/8/1917. 4256 L/Cpl 4 Bn Y & L, transferred to 513388 R D C 2 Observer Corps. Discharged March 1918, reason not known.  b1889 The Dale Hathersage.  1911C living at The Old Dale, Hathersage, and at Coleford Road, Darnell at time of enlistment. Married Mabel Ford at East Dereham, Norfolk, on 20/8/1916. Brother of Henry Watts above and Myra, husband of Robert Alfred Hunter.

ß ă Щ  59311 Pte. R.A.M.C.  b 1878 Hathersage. 1911C living at Old Dale, Hathersage, a jobbing gardener. Brother of Isaac Watts below and Myra, husband of Robert Alfred Hunter. 1918 absent voters list address, The Dale.

(née Pearson). b Belton, Lincs. 1911C at Main Road, Hathersage. Red Cross record; Bank Cottage, Hathersage, caretaker in charge of furnaces & assisted in cleaning at Hathersage VAD Hospital.

Pte 7004 West Yorks Regt, 45617 KOYLI, 194730 D.L.I. Labour Corps. Kept getting moved to various Regiments, suffered from ill health. Never saw action. b 1878 Yeadon, Leeds, 1911C a wool warehouseman in Eccleshill, Yorks. His wife was Mary Ann Elizabeth Woodall, b 1879 Hathersage.

Pte 7645 Alexandra’s Princess of Wales Own Yorkshire Regt. Enlisted 5/10/1914, discharged early 24/3/1916 on medical grounds. b 1882 North Ormesby. 1911C at Middlesbrough. Husband of Alice Green b 1891 Hathersage, who 1891C living at Wood Hut, Bakewell Road.  Which suggests her father Charles was among the people who built the railway.

ă Д  (DC 28/1/1922 listed among Methodist Church Members who had served), 2020/6/1916 enlisted 52800 Pte 25 Provisional East Yorks Regiment, later transferred to 27 Bn D L I, and then to 5 Reserve Bn no 375718.  In 1917 M/404737 Pte was at M T Training Depot R.A.S.C. Isleworth. Discharged 13/2/1919 to reserves. b1882 Manby, Lincs.  A gardener living at Outseats at time of enlistment. Spring 1919 electors register address; The Hill, Outseats. Wife; Harriett.
