WHITE, Thomas

42307 (4207) Pte. East Surrey. Queens Royal West Surrey Regt. 1915 at time of enlistment he is living at Hammersmith. 22/5/1917, discharged early on medical grounds “aggravated by active service”. He died 30/3/1918 age 32 so could well be considered a War Casualty?  b 1885 Hathersage. 1901C living at Downing Row, a stone mason like his father Thomas, 1911C living at Eyam. Brother of Henry, his mother was Sarah Wiggett.

WHITE, Henry

ă 187625 Pte. 25 Works Bn (Labour Coy) D L I, transferred to Labour Corps. b 1877 Hathersage, 1901C living at Downing Row, a stone mason like his father Thomas, 1891C  & 1901C at Downing Row and also at Bank Top, Hathersage. 1918 Absent voters address; The Dale. His wife was Emily Gertrude and his mother was Sarah Wiggett. Brother of Thomas.

WHITE, Arthur

✟ ≠ 2051 Sgt 1/8 Bn Prince of Wales Own West Yorks.  Killed 15/8/1916, his name appears on the Thiepval Memorial, France.  b 1879 Hathersage, father Joseph was a stone mason. Both Arthur b 1879 and brother William b 1877 were born at Hathersage, but by 1891 William was dead. 1881C the family were living at Holbeck Leeds. 1911C Arthur still living in Holbeck. Arthur’s widow was Nancy White of 5 Spa Street, Holbeck.

WHEEN, Reginald Edward

(Spelt ‘WHEIN’ on Wesleyan Memorial). ⚜ ă Д Lt 49 Leicester Regt. He was an Assistant Scout Master with Hathersage Scouts and on the Scouts Board shown as Lt in Notts & Derbys, but in his medal record and on the absent voters list it is ‘Leicesters’. Served in France from 26/4/1917. (DC 27/7/1918, home on leave).   Was in Milton Grange Military Hospital, Liverpool at one stage. He had not yet been demobilised on a 13 October 1919 Scout’s certification. b 1895 Sheffield, family living in Baslow at 1901C,  not found on 1911C. Medal card and absent voters list gives his address as ‘Brightlands’, Park Edge, Hathersage. Son of Kate Creswick Wheen and brother of Marie Creswick Wheen.

WHALLEY, Frank

ă 1918  Absent voters list gives; 204573 A Coy 2 Plat Notts & Derbys. Medal card shows he was later transferred, G/72997 22 London Regt & Queens Royal West Surrey Regt (same number for both). (DC 14/9/1918, reported him wounded). Living at the George Hotel on 1918 Absent voters list where his name is spelt ‘Walley’. Otherwise no more detail have been found.

WESTWOOD, George Frederick

Acting CPL 13207 MGC, 21289 DLI. George fought at Loos, the Somme and Passchendaele but know none of the detail other than he was involved at Le Trone (?) Wood.

Wounded twice. (see pic of him on left, taken at a Military Hospital after Battle of Loos 1915. Note DLI cap badges). b 1895. 1911C a hammer heater in Sheffield. Son of Mary Standrin, (b 1874 Hathersage see pic c 1920s), who was tragically killed while re-wallpapering their home in 1930. She was stripping the old paper and placing the pieces in the large front pocket of her apron, when she leaned over the coal range. She died of burns in Sheffield Infirmary. George’s brother was Alfred above and his cousins were Fred Standrin, and John Willie Standrin, above. George Frederick married Florence Wright b Sheffield 1896, Their elder son George, b Sheffield 1920, served with Bomber Command in WW2.

WESTWOOD, Alfred. M.M.

Joined up 3/9/1914 (under age, it stated 19 on his form when in fact he was 16).  On his Army record the Medical Officer A.R Fordyce wrote ” Apparent age 19 years 60 days, I consider him fit for service”.  40151 East Yorks Regt before being transferred 29/12/1916 Sgt 13228  Y & L. Wounded; GSW left ear Oct 1915, GSW right arm July 1916, Gas Shell 8/11/1918 (just before the armistice) He also contracted ‘trench foot’ which resulted in him having one foot smaller than the other.  Awarded M.M.

b 1897 Sheffield. 1911C in Sheffield, a saw mill hand. Married Ethel Needham (née Ford) widow of Herbert Needham KIA. Alfred was the brother of George Frederick below and cousin of Fred Standrin and John Willie Standrin above, through his mother Mary Standrin, (b 1874 Hathersage).

WELLS, Edward Joseph

Pte 21185 52 Bn KOYLI. b 1900 Sheffield, 1911C in Sheffield, his mother was Clara Wilson b 1873 Hathersage, 1881C living in Sheffield. 1871C her family living on London Road, (now Station Road), Hathersage.
