PARKINSON, Benjamin Hinchcliffe
ă R.A.F,/R.F.C Air Mechanic 1st Class. (DC 7/4/1917; ‘visited his home in Hathersage this week on leave’). b 1888 Sheffield, he became a motor engineer. 1911C married with one young infant living in Doncaster. On 1918 absent voters address; Castleton Road, Hathersage. Brother in law to Charles James Fox.
PALEY, Ada
née Bosworth. b 1872 Sheffield. 1911C at Leam View, Crossland Road, Hathersage. Her husband Thomas was the Station Master. Red Cross record; nursing and general duties at Hathersage VAD Hospital.

Щ (WHW2W p 40 with picture). Sister, Hathersage VAD Hospital 28/2/1919. This is probably Annie Owens b 1865 Chester, 1911C a nurse at Atherton, Lancs.
OUTRAM, Francis (Frank) George.
✟ ≠ 15029 Pte. Prince of Wales Own West Yorks Regt., 2 Bn. Joined up on 23/10/1914. He was badly wounded in both legs on 23/7/1916 but returned to France in May 1917, only to be K.I.A. 31/7/1917 (DC 8/9/1917, a picture of him & a report on the front page). Remembered on Menin Gate, Memorial, Ypres. b 1894 Pontefract, son of Francis Edward Outram formerly of Hathersage, he was 2nd Footman to the Archbishop of York. The Outram family lived in the Hathersage village for many years, first appearing in 1881. Frank was eldest grandson of Georgina, who ran a Bakers & Confectioners on the Main Road. His father Francis Edward was b Grindleford.

L/Cpl 469 12/15 Bn Y & L. POW from 20/7/1916. b 1894 Grindleford Bridge. 1911C a bank clerk living in Eyam. Son of Robert Outram b1858 Stoke, his mother was Emma Broomhead b1854 Hathersage.

NICHOLSON, Sydney
He was a volunteer. (DC 19/1/1918. (age 33) a plumber. Granted 4 months exemption). (DC 25/5/1918 (age 34) Class A. One month exemption, and to be medically examined). (DC 12/10/1918 Grade 1, previous exemption certificate confirmed), so it is unlikely he was ever called up after then.
NEWTON, Wallace Harry
Christened Newton, birth registered as Higginson, and died as Higginson, but he is shown as ‘Newton’ on all the military records. On 5/3/1898, a labourer he signed on at Glossop for 6 years as a militiaman, 6155 2 Bn Derbyshire Regt. It would seem he lied on enlistment as being 18 years 2 months, as he would only be 17 years 2 months. b 1881 Hathersage. 1898 enlistment showed he had resided at Whitfield, Glossop for last twelve months. 1901C he is living in Scotland. 1911C living at Redditch, Worcs, a motor mechanic. Probably enlisted again, 65080 Highland Light Infantry, and served with the Black & Tans (Ireland) circa 1920. Parents Isaac and Ruth (Higginson). 1911C living at Glossop. Wallace Newton’s mother Ruth was sister to Thomas; Charlie Higginson/Newton’s father. Wallace’s wife Jeannie was Scottish and the family went back to Scotland before emigrating to Canada in 1923. They had a son also called Wallace b 1899 in Lanarkshire, Scotland, a year after the father enlisted, who probably also served. (See Aaron Newton above)
