EYRE, George

ß Щ Most probably George Claude Eyre b 1893 Main Road Hathersage. Parents were John and Martha. 1911C Hotel Ostler for the Marquis of Granby. Cannot find more military information.

Father John was originally an Ostler at the Ordnance Arms, Hathersage, in 1881 and in 1891 listed as a groom in Manchester. There were five brothers of military age, John A Eyre, George Claude Eyre, Thomas Walter Eyre, William Eyre b1887 Manchester, & James Henry Eyre. Nothing has been found for William in any military records.

EYDES, Reginald

✟ Щ  165857 Gnr 130 Battery 40 Brigade R.F.A.  D of W. 13/10/1917 age 20, Grave; Ypres Reservoir Cemetery. Reginald’s name also appears on Abney, Bradwell and Hope Memorials as well as Hathersage.

His family’s grave is in Hathersage Churchyard. b 1896 Hathersage. 1901C living at Mount Pleasant, Highlow. He was engaged to Alice Mosley, from Harper Lees Farm, who after Reginald died became Mrs Albert Stuart Botham in 1922. The Eydes family can be traced to around 1786 at Peppercorn (just S of Shatton, in the grounds of Westfield) then Old Lees Farm, (cow keepers, farm labourers, game keepers and farmers) until about 1871 when the main part of the family migrated to Sheffield.  At some stage in the late 19 century, Thomas b 1853 at Hope, one of the family of the nine, and  Reginald’s father, farmed at Callow Farm, Highlow, near Offerton Hall, where in the mid-20 century, Lawrence Dungworth farmed (see above). 1911C family lived at Callow Farm, Highlow, with father Thomas and mother Martha Hestor (neé Frost b Eyam Woodlands 1867). Thomas and Martha were married at Hathersage in 1892. Reginald’s siblings were; Frank, b Hathersage, April 1894, died 1/7/1912, (never married), Robert b Hathersage Oct 1895, died Mar 1966, (married Maud Bagshaw 1919, at St Barnabas Church, Bradwell. No children traced), who probably lived at the Homestead Farm, Eyam. There was also a sister; Mary b and d 1899.

ELLIS, John William

✟ ≠ Cpl 1/1 West Riding Field Coy R.E. 7/6/1915 died of wounds received in the Dardanelles. He died aboard the Hospital Ship Grantully Castle, and is buried in East Mudos Military Cemetery, Lemnos, Greece. (DC 28/6/1915 died age 34) (Belper News 16/7/1915; he had been in the ‘Sheffield Engineers’ for many years and as a member of the Old Volunteer Force he received the long service medal, and continued his connection with the Corps after the passing of the Territorial Act. He went through the South African (Boer) war and again offered his services on the commencement of the present war. He was sent out to the Dardenelles a short time ago.  He also had a brother who went through the South African war). (DC 10/7/1915; worked for Vickers Ltd., lived at 111 Newman Road, Wincobank, Sheffield. He leaves a widow and four children). b 1880 Sheffield, he was the second son of Samuel and Mary Ellen who lived at ‘Elmhirst’ (Ninelands Road), Hathersage.

NEILL, Norman

Joined up in Canada, Aug 1915. 10447 44 Bn Canadian Expeditionary Force, later 3 Bn.  b22/6/1886 Sheffield. 1905 UK Electrical Engineers list living at Nether Padley, Hathersage. 1901C at boarding school, Barrow on Soar, Leics. 1911C family living at Grindleford.

MUTON, Erskine Henry. MBE

Served with the Merchant Marine; 1914-1918 and 1939-1945, and is on the medals list for both. 6/2/1917 he was serving on the SS Tyndareus, a troop ship when it struck a mine that had been laid by the German raider ‘Wolf’ off the coast of South Africa. The ship went down but all hands rescued. (Google; ’Tyndareus’ for details).

After WW1 he worked for the White Star shipping line and was held by the Japanese when they invaded China. He was a prisoner of the Japanese at the notorious “Bridge House” prison and torture centre in Shanghai (see ‘Target Tokyo’, James M Scott notes; Prisoner Experiences from Written Statements). 1924 awarded Masters & Mates Certificate. WW2 as a civilian Lighter Pilot for the Brunei State Marine he was awarded the MBE for his part in Limbang Raid there in Dec 1962, guiding in two vessels of British Commandos to quell the revolt. b 1900 Leeds, father; Henry George Muton, below. Buxton Advertiser 2/7/1910; Empire Day Celebrations in Hathersage, he, his sister Emily and mother mentioned. The article virtually lists all the ‘great and the good’ who were in Hathersage at the time. 1911C in Paignton Devon.

MUNK, Frank Edward

Pte 495615 13/6/ Bns London Regt. Enlisted 10/12/1915, mobilised 6/6/1917 (they must have been getting desperate as he was never fit and suffered with trench fever). b Brixton 1885. 1911C a printer. His mother was Caroline Middleton, b1851 Hathersage, sister of William Henry and Mary (Jennison) Middleton.
