He joined T.A. KOYLI in 1912 as 1722 Bugler, later Pte 240062 2/5 KOYLI. He was wounded three times.  b 1892 at Whitwood Mere, Castleford and became a coal miner. He was brother to George above. Their father James Kaye was b 1862 Hathersage, who on 1911C was at Whitwood Mere, Castleford, and seemed to have had a variety of names. On the 1871C in Hathersage he was shown as James Key, and listed under parents Joseph & Fanny Hickmon (actually ‘Hickinson’ and his mother was Frances Key, which suggests he may have been Illegitimate).

✟ ≠ Pte 1719 2/5 KOYLI, D of W 29/5/1915, buried at Merville Communal Cemetery, and also remembered on the Whitwood War Memorial. b 1894 Whitwood, Castleford, and became a glass blower at Whitwood Mere. 45387 Pte North Staffs (Prince of Wales) Regiment.  b 1887 Sheffield. 1911C living on Main Road, Hathersage, a railway clerk.

RNVR no TS.6026.  b Grimsby 1891, a window cleaner. son of Elizabeth Hickinson b Hathersage 1868, who by 1911C was widowed. His father was a mariner in Grimsby. James Henry was a brother to George Arthur above, and cousin to Ernest Hickinson, KIA, above.

Pte 241946 2/5 Lincolnshire Regt. He was badly wounded 27/9/1917, GSW to face and arm. b Grimsby, son of Elizabeth Hickinson b Hathersage 1868, but by 1911C she was widowed. His father was a mariner living in Grimsby. George Arthur was brother to James Henry below, and cousin to Ernest Hickinson, KIA, above.

2/Lt in the East Surrey Regt. Capt 16 East Surrey Regt attached to 1st Hertfordshire Regt.(SDT 12/1/1917; Awarded the Military Cross for personal bravery and good leadership in the great battle on the Anere Front on the 13/11/1916). (SDT 12/1/1917 p2; with photo). b 1896 Brixton. (DC 29/1/1916 article; from Inns of Court Officer Training Corps, the son of Mr William Johnston, London, secretary of the Chemists’ Defence Association. His mother was Sarah Bradwell, b Cliffe House, Hathersage, (which was a farm & earlier the ‘Bull & Mouth’ pub until 1844), daughter of the late Mr Hugh Bradwell, Cunliffe House, Hathersage).

ă Pte 240481 16^th Bn N & D, later Cpl 2/5 Bn until he was wounded and came back to England to join the 2/6 Bn. (DC 27/7/1915 ‘Cpl Jessop has previously been wounded’). Eventually promoted to Company Quarter Master Sgt.

b 1890 Sheffield. 1911C living at Birley Farm, Hathersage, a clerk. He was married during the war to Ellen Wilson, also known as Nellie, from Birley Farm.  In 1922 they lived at Westlowe Cottage (adjacent to Hill Farm at the end of Ranmoor Hill, and long since demolished), where son Peter was born.  In 1925 they lived at 1 Ranmoor Hill, where son Tony was born, who married Norah, daughter of Francis Wilkin.

He was secretary of Hathersage British Legion for many years and then chairman, and died tragically falling downstairs at ‘Ivylea’ Roslyn Crescent, Hathersage in 1952.

2/Lt Prince of Wales Own West Yorkshire Regt. Lt Essex Regt, wounded at Gallipoli.  Acting Captain 14 Prince of Wales Own West Yorks Regt. Went to France 6/10/1915. Awarded M.C. Citation, London Gazette MID 22/5/1917; “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in bringing his Stokes mortar and ammunition forward by hand for a distance of 5 miles, keeping pace with the infantry throughout. At the end of this exhausting march he got his guns into position and kept them in action against hostile strong points under heavy fire. His own personality and endurance alone made this fine feat possible.”  (DC 26/10/1918 ‘Reported wounded’).

b1893 Gorton, Manchester.  1901C lived with his parents Richard and Annie, Lake Hotel, Hyde Road, Gorton, Manchester (father was the hotel manager) 1911C he was at school, living with his parents at Stanley Grove, Longsight, Manchester (father listed as a licenced victualler). The family were the founders and proprietors of Belle Vue Pleasure Gardens in Manchester. They Lived at ‘Sunnyside’ Outseats and ‘Hillfield House’, Outseats. The Middletons’ were also related. Hubert Jennison’s Grandmother was Mary Middleton. Her younger brother was William Middleton father of Charles, John Robert, Arthur & Ernest Middleton. Hubert married Doris Bentley 28/1/1919. He was a textile chemist and died 28/3/1956 age 63. Probate granted to his widow Doris Bentley of Kirkwood 44 Bradford Rd, Tranmere Park, Guisely, effects £25,470 4s 11d (A lot of money in 1956.)
