87612 Pte 22nd Northumberland Fusiliers. Discharged early on medical grounds. He did not go overseas.  b 1899 Hathersage, son of Abraham and Bertha, brother of Colin H, Martha, Mary, Elizabeth and Frank G (twin?).  Nothing definite found about his brother’s service, if any. 1901C and 1911C living at Main Road, Hathersage.

GREGORY, John Darvill

ă Д  (DC 28/1/1922 listed among Methodist Church Members who had served). Pte  K O Y L I, & 12/382 Sheffield City Bn Y & L. (DC 12/12/1914; a member of Wesleyans who had joined up in the KOYLI). On 1918 absent voters listed as 382, 31 Div Y & L., home address; Roslyn Road, Hathersage. b 1892, at Castle Bytham, Lincs. He lived Back Lane Top, Hathersage, a clerk, elder son of Mr & Mrs Walter Gregory of Crossland Road, Hathersage. (DC 7/8/1915; he married Mary Newell Farne daughter of Mrs C H Farne of The Crescent (Roslyn Crescent?), Hathersage. The bride was given away by Capt F F McKenna, 2 Barnsley Battalion). John Stanley Wood married his sister Mary Susannah Catherine Gregory on 10/7/1915.

GREENWOOD, Joseph

ß Щ  Although he is shown on the Bible Class board, it has not been possible find anything definitive about his military involvement. b 1882 Glossop. Son of Albert Greenwood b 1861 Glossop and Emily (nee Newton) b Hathersage. He married Minnie Winterbottom b Outseats. On both the 1901C (living in Norfolk) and 1911C Joseph is listed as a railway contractor.  There was also a brother Josiah b1884 Glossop.

GREEN, William H

✟ ≠ 26147 C.Q.M.S. R.G.A. Frenchmans Battery, South Shields. He was almost certainly a soldier before the outbreak of war. He died 12/5/1917 (age 40) at No 2 General Scottish Hospital, Edinburgh. Grave; Edinburgh (Comely Bank) Cemetery., where  his wife is shown as Sophia D Richter (formerly Green) of South Africa. There is an Ancestry record for William Green b 1877 Grindleford Bridge, (although shown b 1877 Kingston, Staffs per 1881C and 1911C.  Son of John and Harriett Green, brother of Ernest Josiah. 1881C the family are living at Grindleford Bridge. 1891C Harriet Green and family (but not William) are living at Old Dale, Hathersage. William listed himself as from Hathersage working at Bradfield.

U.S. Army, WW1; Pte Co  K Casual Det. b 1891 Clare, Clare County, Michigan, U.S.A. His father was Christopher Green b 1859 Hathersage, who was living 1861C and 1871C  at White Edge Lodge, Longshaw, before going to America.

GREEN, George Henry. D.C.M.

✟ ≠ 35450 Cpl  21 T.M. Battery, R.F.A. Died 21/3/1918. Remembered at Pozieres Memorial, France.  b 1894 Hathersage. 1901C living at 47 The Dale, mother Sarah Ann. The family moved to Alma Road, Tideswell after his father John died (a railway worker) prior to 1911C.

(DC 3/6/1916; article says Mr & Mrs Geo Higginbotham, The Dale, Hathersage, informed that their nephew, Pte George Green, Northants Regt, had died from wounds received in action. He was 19 years of age and before enlistment he was employed by the G.P.O. on telephone construction work and formerly lived in the Dale, Hathersage. His parents died some time ago). Grave; Hersin Communal Cemetery Extension. Pas de Calais, France. Ref; 1-B-19. b 1897 White Edge Lodge, Hathersage. 1901C, 44 The Dale, Hathersage and 1911C, still at The Dale, an errand boy. Son of George, a quarry man, and Hannah. Siblings; Jane, Ellen, Andrew & Grace. A relative was Mrs Agutter of Catcliffe Cottages, Bakewell.
