285160 Pte R A S C (MT).  b 1887 Newtown Row, Hathersage. 1911C living at Linthwaite, Yorks., son of William (b 1849 Brampton, Chesterfield) & Sarah Ann (b1850 Southwell, Notts.) who were in 1881C living ‘near the Thatched Tavern’, Hathersage Booths, and 1891C at Newtown Row. John William was the brother-in-law to William Bower above, whose wife Gladys Rowbottom, b 1884 Hathersage, and who died during WW1 on 24/6/1916, was his sister.

ROWBOTHAM, Mark

Pte 216710 Packers & Loaders Section RASC T4.  b 1884 at Darley Dale. 1911C at Hayfield a  Dock Labourer. His wife was Harriett Anne Slack b1886 Hathersage. The Slack family farm was “Greenwood“, Note Car Lane, Harper Lees, Hathersage.

ROSS, Edward

✟ ≠ Lt 22 Bn Manchester Regiment. Joined up in July 1915, was wounded in Dec 1916 and returned to his unit in April 1917 and promoted full Lt in May. D of W 7/10/17. Grave; Godewaersvelde British Cemetery, France. b 1895 Sale, Cheshire. Only son of Philip Harvey and Emily Ross of Longley. Educated at Oak View Boarding School Hathersage and Manchester. Passed 2nd Div Civil Service Exam, employed at the Admiralty, London. Parents had moved to Tunbridge Wells by 1917.

ROSEVEARE, John Couch Adams O.B.E.

Gazetted 1915 2/Lt Kent Fortress Engineer.  Acting Captain Royal Monmouthshire Regt.  Saw service in Gallipoli, Palestine, Middle East and France. Awarded O.B.E. (His son of the same name won the D.S.O. for his part in the D Day Landings in WW2). b 1880, Wivelscombe Devon. 1911C living at Cannonfields, Hathersage.  Resident Engineer for the Derwent Dam.

ROOSE, Arthur. (Holmes, Arthur)

ă 796145 Gnr 49 D &M Battery R A., R F A,  later Tank Corps. b 1894 Horsforth, Leeds. (Arthur Roose is in fact Arthur Holmes, the illegitimate son of Phyllis Holmes (b Hathersage), who later marries Thomas Roose. 1911C the family are living at Padley, Hathersage.  Various records alternate between ‘Roose’ & ‘Holmes’. His 1918 absent voters address is ‘Grindleford’.

RONKSLEY, Joseph Victor

Pte 184592 Machine  Gun Corps  enlisted 2/3/1916 called up 21/9/1918. b 1897 Greenhill. 1911C at Coal Aston. His father was Joseph Ronksley, b1854 Hathersage, he became a farmer at Coal Aston.

RONKSLEY, Leonard

✟ ≠ 10878 Pte 14 Bn Northumberland Fusiliers. K I A 26/9/1915. Grave, Vermelles British Cemetery, France. b 1890 ‘Oak View’, Bakewell Road, Hathersage (now Station Road). 1911C, living at Hillsborough, Sheffield. War graves record shows he was a native of Hathersage and the son of John Thomas and Martha Ronksley of 27 Dyker Hall Road, Hillsborough.

RODGERS, William

✟ ≠ 26332 Notts & Derbys, 39623 Pte 7 Bn North Staffordshire Regiment (Prince of Wales Own). Died of disease following field operations in Persia 29/9/1918, age 37. Buried in Kazvin British War Cemetery, Peris (ref; C.9) but later moved to Tehran War Cemetery, Iran.

b1892, Barnfield House, Hathersage, but by 1911C, the family were living in Nottingham.

RODEN, Miss Mary
