Member of Hathersage British Legion committee in 1943. 25/5/2015 some info from granddaughter of William Hickinson and great niece of John Cotterill Hickinson;- “Dad mentioned the Prince family as being relatives, Herbert was married to a Hickinson – apparently he visited them regularly in Barnfield Cottages (no 7) and grandad would cut his hair for him”.

b 1898 and baptised 10/7/1898 at Hathersage. Lived at White Edge Lodge, Longshaw, & Stoney Ridge Farm, Longshaw. Son of Septimus and Emily Jane Priestley (née Buttery) of White Edge Lodge. A relative was Mrs A Haslam, Barbridge Farm, Fox House. 1901C living at Strawberry Lee, Totley, with his mother and siblings; John (twin) and Harold, age 1. All b Hathersage except Harold b (Totley?) Dore. 1911C all living at White Edge Lodge plus Archie (8) b Dore & Dorothy Evelyn (5) b Hathersage. He was cousin to James Luther Buttery and Percy Luther Buttery, and Lancelot William Hancock above, and to Percy and Sydney Skerritt below.

David had two other sons, George b 1894 Derwent and Ernest b 1898 Derwent, but no military records have been found of these. 1911C all living at Jubilee Cottages, Derwent.

PRIESTLEY, Alfred Thompson
307223 Pte Army Service Corps. b 1882 Chapeltown. 1911C in Ranby Road, Sheffield, a clerk. Living at Grindleford at time of enlistment in 1915. Married to Annie Gilby Brougham, b 1878 Sheffield. Her father was William Brougham of 11 Crossland Road, Hathersage, who died in 1923 age 82 (Obituary DT 20/1/1923) and who was a part time Methodist Minister, living in Hathersage during the war. He also had three sons, John, William and Joe, but no military records found for them. Alfred Thompson died in 1950 also at 11 Crossland Road, Hathersage, as did his wife in 1966.

Д b 1889 Sheffield. 1911C living at Park Edge, Hathersage, she married the vicar of Bakewell, the Rev John Newbould, who died Dec 1918. Red Cross record; a nurse at Hathersage VAD hospital, transferred to Special Service Manchester.
