RENDEL, Andrew James. M.C. †  ≠  Capt (Acting Maj) RFA. Commissioned 1907, went to France Autumn 1914, awarded M.C. Spring 1916, and shortly afterwards was wounded by shell-shock, Returned to active service early 1917. Died of wounds received on the same day; 29/7/1917. Buried Noeux les Mines Communal Cemetery, near Bethune, France. b1888 Kensington, London, a grandson pf Sir Alexander Rendel, he was educated at Rugby and the Royal Miltary Academy. As a Lieutenant, he married Gladys Louise Romer, b 1889 Marylebone, London, at Hathersage Church on 17/5/1913, while she was living at Nether Hall. Mr & Mrs Fairholme of Nether Hall were witnesses. Two sons of Capt H. A. Hamilton acted as page boys, as reported in SDT 19/5/1913 p9. His obituary was in the Army & Navy Gazette, 7/7/1917 p10 and his photo appeared in the Illustrated London News on 28/7/1917 p18.

THORPE, George. ✟ Pte 7300 KOYLI, Captured Mons 24/8/1914. POW Rohrbeck Camp, supposedly died of wounds 25/10/1917, although according to POW records he was captured uninjured. Buried; Berlin South-Western Cemetery, Germany. b1885, lived at 44 Wallace Road, Sheffield (his sister’s address). He may have been a serving soldier prior to the outbreak of the war, brother of Frederick and Charles. their father John, b Hathersage in 1855, lived at Bean Row Hathersage in 1861C and died in Sheffield 27/5/1915.

THORPE, Frederick. Enlisted 1909. L/Sgt 890 4 Y&L, Act C.S.M 200071 4 Y&L. b1892, lived at 99 Douglas Road, Parkwood Springs, Sheffield, brother of George and Charles Thorpe. Their father John, b Hathersage in 1855, lived at Bean Row, Hathersage in 1861C and died in Sheffield 27/5/1915.

THORPE, Charles. ✟ Pte 66439 1/6 Bn Northumberland Fusiliers. KIA 11/4/1918, remembered on the Ploegstreet Memorial, panel 2. b1899, lived at 44 Wallace Road, Sheffield (his sister’s address), brother of Frederick and George Thorpe. Their father John, b Hathersage in 1855, lived at Bean Row, Hathersage in 1861C and died 27/5/1915 in Sheffield.

TEASDALE, Edward. ✟  L/Cpl 25914 East Yorks Regt. 53345 D.L.I. KIA 9/10 April 1917, remembered on Arras Memorial, France. b1881 Sheffield, and lived at 124 Carr Road, Walkley. He married Mary Ann Travis b1871 at Tean, Staffs, a school teacher living at Ranmoor Hill, Hathersage. 1911C she was living with the Teasdale family in Sheffield. The couple later moved to Hull.

NEILL, Harry. ✟ Sgt 12/193 York & Lancs (Sheffield Battalion), A Coy, KIA 1/7/1916 age 41. Buried Queens Cemetery, Puiseux. b1874 Sheffield, son of Robert Renton & Emily Margaret Neill, of 21 Whitworth Road, Ranmoor, Sheffield. 1911C a tailor, living at Nether Padley, with his parents, brother & sister. There is a plaque in St Helen’s Church, Grindleford, commemorating him and the fact that he used to preach there.

HOLMES, Edward Marshall. M.C.  Major 4 Bn Y & L. b1888 Sheffield, son of Edward  and Emily Mary Holmes who lived at ‘Mont Vue’, Castleton Road, Hathersage, where his mother died two weeks before her son’s marriage in 1919. His father moved to ‘Fieldhead’, Nether Padley, Grindleford, where he died in 1921. (Mansfield Reporter 11/7/1919; ‘Marriage at St Peter’s Church, Mansfield on 5^th inst., Capt Edward M Holmes M.C., son of Mr & Mrs Edward Holmes of Hathersage, to Gwendoline M Muschamp, daughter of Captain & Mrs Muschamp, of ‘Elmfield’, Mansfield).  1911C living at Psalter lane, Sheffield, a Surveyor, he died 14/6/1929 at Sheffield

✟ Pte 1481 23rd Bn (Tyneside Scottish) Northumberland Fusiliers. Enlisted Newcastle. KIA 1/7/16 –Remembered on Thiepval Memorial. b 1882 Sheffield, in 1912 married Lena Ethel Tweedy at Hartlepool. Son of George Schofield, b 1846 Hathersage, a wire drawer, 1911C living at Wakefield.

HILL, William Lade. ✟ 18695 Pte 15 BN Royal Scots. Enlisted at Manchester on 24/12/1914 while living at The Green, Grindleford, giving his age as 30 years 9 months. (this conflicts with ages given on various census returns. He possibly lied as at 35 he may have been considered too old to join up). He joined his company at Edinburgh on 29/12/1914, eventually going to France on 8/1/1916 where he was KIA on 1/7/1916 and remembered on the Thiepval Memorial (pier 6D & 7D). His records show several misdemeanours including missing without reason several times, resulting in loss of pay and being confined to barracks. His N of K was his mother, but she had died on 18/5/1916 at Tedgness, Nether Padley, Grindleford, and is buried at Eyam, so his effects were sent to his sister Catherine. William was b1880 at Liscard, Cheshire, on census forms, (or Port Glasgow on his enlistment papers, probably so he could join a Scottish Regiment), and he lived most years in Cheshire, with his father William, who died in 1910, his mother Susan Cumming  (née  Lade, b Port Glasgow, Scotland) , and siblings, Catherine, Archibald and Isabella (all born in Cheshire). He gave his trade as an Agent.

Red Cross records refer to her as Lilian Benton a night nurse at Hathersage VAD hospital. She also lived at Cannon Fields, Hathersage and was also referred to as ‘Lillie’ Benton in the death notice of her husband (Sheff Independent 14/2/1917). Her daughter Annie Benton, and her sister Amy Beatrice Camm were also nurses there, and her sister-in-law Jessica Payne Benton, was a night nurse there.
