NEWTON/HIGGINSON, Percy.

(Known as Percy Higginson, before their father died, then as Percy Newton). Stoker First Class R.N. (SDT 27/4/1917;’Serving on HMS Broke, has two brothers fighting in France’). b1887 Leeds, Brother of Charles Newton/Higginson and Joseph Newton/Higginson, (and James Newton/Higginson, b1876 Hathersage, a police constable in Sheffield City Police, who did not serve in the forces),  sons of the late Thomas Francis (b1852 Hathersage, registered as ‘Higginson’ but baptised as ‘Newton’),) a Hackle Pin Grinder, and Martha Newton (née Barber, b 1854 Hathersage). In 1891C the family is called Higginson living in Leeds. In 1898 father Thomas Francis Newton dies in Sheffield, mother Martha does not remarry. The whole family appear on 1901C & 1911C in Sheffield, as ‘Newton’.

(Known as Joseph Higginson, before their father died, then as Joseph Newton). Pte 34294 Lincs Regt., 26879 Labour Corps, 94686 Royal Defence Corps. b1890 Leeds. 1911C 50 Fleet Street. Brother of Charles Newton/Higginson and Percy Newton/Higginson (and James Newton/Higginson, b1876 Hathersage, a police constable in Sheffield City Police, who did not serve in the forces.) sons of the late Thomas Francis (b1852 Hathersage, registered as ‘Higginson’ but baptised as ‘Newton’), a Hackle Pin Grinder, and Martha Newton (née Barber, b 1854 Castleton). In 1891C the family is called Higginson living in Leeds. In 1898 father Thomas Francis Newton dies in Sheffield, mother Martha does not remarry. The whole family appear on 1901C & 1911C in Sheffield, as ‘Newton’.

MANNEER, Tom Wellington.

Lt., Cheshire Regt., in France from 20/12/1916. Capt., served in India, 63 Palmacollah L I, Indian Army after WW1. b 1898 Bovey Tracey, Devon, son of Rev Richard Wellington Menneers. Married May Rosamund Pawson of ‘Hillcrest’ Baslow on 18/9/1927 at Baslow. (1932, 1936 & 1941 Kelly’s living at ‘Ingleside’ Nether Padley).

WILSON, Thomas

WILSON, Thomas. Warrant Officer 2nd CLASS. 2, 9, & 5 Bn K O Y L I. Probably already a serving soldier at outbreak of war as his medal record has him going to France 11/11/1914 as 6949 Cpl. b 1886 Sheffield, baptised Hathersage June 1897 along with his three siblings. Father Thomas Wilson b 1860 Sheffield, mother Mary Ann Schofield, b 1859 Hathersage to Hathersage parents, and died late 1896 at Sheffield.

WHITMORE, Ernest.

 9893 Pte, KOYLI. A regular soldier, enlisted 20/10/1908 in Special Reserve. Served 9 months in South Africa in 1910, 2 years in Hong Kong 1911-1913, 1 year in Singapore 1913-1914, France 1915-1916. Received injury to knee and bullet wound to right ankle. Discharged as unfit for further duty 17/7/1916 age 27, intended place of residence given as 7 Crossland Road, Hathersage. b1896 Attercliffe, Sheffield, 1917 he married Caroline Hopkinson b c1876 Sheffield, (widow, née Rhodes). Their daughter Marjorie Mary Whitmore b 1918, married James Harold Holmes, brother of Bernard Holmes. Ernest died 1918 age 32 and his wife died 1957, both buried in Hathersage churchyard.

STANBRIDGE, Francis Harold.

Pte 12598 6 Kings Royal Rifles Corps. Enlisted 29/5/1915, (Probably Pte 3523 2/6 Bn., North Staffs before this). He later transferred to Spr 308929 R.E., WR 126183  Railways Transport Dept. Discharged 24/6/1919. b 14/8/1894 Burton-on-Trent. 1911C shown as ‘Frank’ living at 5 Moon Street, Burton-on-Trent. After the war, he moved to Sheffield to work as a railway signalman, where he met and in 1924 married Lily Hoyland (b1902 Firth Park, Sheffield). In 1929 the family moved to Crossland Road, Hathersage, when he became a railway signalman at the Hathersage signal box. In 1932/33 while still working at the Hathersage box they moved to 3 Woodland View, Grindleford, until he died in January 1986.
