ROOSE, Arthur. (Holmes, Arthur)

ă 796145 Gnr 49 D &M Battery R A., R F A,  later Tank Corps. b 1894 Horsforth, Leeds. (Arthur Roose is in fact Arthur Holmes, the illegitimate son of Phyllis Holmes (b Hathersage), who later marries Thomas Roose. 1911C the family are living at Padley, Hathersage.  Various records alternate between ‘Roose’ & ‘Holmes’. His 1918 absent voters address is ‘Grindleford’.

RONKSLEY, Joseph Victor

Pte 184592 Machine  Gun Corps  enlisted 2/3/1916 called up 21/9/1918. b 1897 Greenhill. 1911C at Coal Aston. His father was Joseph Ronksley, b1854 Hathersage, he became a farmer at Coal Aston.

RONKSLEY, Leonard

✟ ≠ 10878 Pte 14 Bn Northumberland Fusiliers. K I A 26/9/1915. Grave, Vermelles British Cemetery, France. b 1890 ‘Oak View’, Bakewell Road, Hathersage (now Station Road). 1911C, living at Hillsborough, Sheffield. War graves record shows he was a native of Hathersage and the son of John Thomas and Martha Ronksley of 27 Dyker Hall Road, Hillsborough.

RODGERS, William

✟ ≠ 26332 Notts & Derbys, 39623 Pte 7 Bn North Staffordshire Regiment (Prince of Wales Own). Died of disease following field operations in Persia 29/9/1918, age 37. Buried in Kazvin British War Cemetery, Peris (ref; C.9) but later moved to Tehran War Cemetery, Iran.

b1892, Barnfield House, Hathersage, but by 1911C, the family were living in Nottingham.

RODEN, Miss Mary

(This is probably Mabel Briscoe Roden b 1890 Elton. 1911C The family living at Roslyn Crescent, father Noah was the local School Teacher, where his wife and Mabel also taught). Red Cross record; Roslyn Crescent, a nurse at Hathersage VAD Hospital.

ROCHE, (ROACH) Frederick Armand

(Spelt ‘Hermond’ on 1919 Voters Register). ă   Д  (DC 28/1/1922 listed among Methodist Church Members who had served).  Pte 12/497 Bn York and Lancs (Sheffield City Battalion) a stretcher bearer, left out of 1st July Somme attack. Later 2 Bn Durham Light Infantry. (DC 12/12/1914; ‘One of Wesleyans to join up’). b 1895 Hathersage. A grocer’s assistant. 1919 Voters register shown living on Station Road. Brother of Victor William Roche below.

ROBINSON, Herbert

ă 33517 R F A. Joined August 1914, but discharged after 24 days on medical grounds. He was later called up again in 1916, 19500 Cpl 13 Bn Y & L., at time of enlistment living at Lilac Walk, Hathersage. (DC 15 Feb 1919; Soldiers who have received their discharge papers includes Cpl Herbert Robinson). b 1892 Litton, Derbyshire. 1911C at Cliffe Cottage, Hathersage, a clerk.
