ß Щ  (Spelt Lewis on Bible board, in WHW2W and in DC & HPN). 12538 Pte 8 Bn Y & L. (SDT 15/7/1916 listed as in hospital suffering from wounds to the head). (HPN 9/12/1916; ‘Lewis has gone through a series of operations and has been moved to a convalescent camp in the south. He hopes to be in Hathersage before long’). 10/7/1917; discharged due to G.S.W to leg.  b 1894 Highlow,  1911C living at “The Hill, Outseats”.  Brother of Benjamin, John and Joseph.

CHEVENS, John

✟ ß Щ  (Spelt CHEVANS on Hathersage War Memorial. Army had his details as Chevers). 13648 L/Cpl 10 Bn Y & L. (note similar Army number to his brother Joseph, suggesting they joined up together) Joined Y & L M.G.C. D of W 2/7/1916 age 27. Grave; Heilly Station Cemetery, Mericourt-L’Abbé, France. His is one of three names on the same headstone. Also listed on Bamford War Memorial. b c1888 Bamford (although given as ‘Hathersage’ on 1901C).  1891C; parents Benjamin & Elizabeth Chevins of 3 The Hill, Hathersage, who died 1901 and 1899 respectively, who are remembered in Hathersage Churchyard.  Brother of Benjamin, (who it is thought did not serve) Joseph & Louis. 1911C living at 5 The Hill Cottages, Outseats, (these were on the end of Ranmoor Lane, all since demolished), a railway labourer and boarder with John & Elizabeth Field. He married Nora B ? of Bird’s Hill, Heath & Reach, Leighton Buzzard, Beds. (SDT 5/8/1916, -name spelt Chevins-: ‘Late of 31 Old Hall Road, Attercliffe, killed in action. He was 29 and leaves a wife and one child’.) His sister-in-law was Mrs Chevans, in 1988 of Mill Lane, Hathersage.

CHARLES, Frank Dallas

9198 Cpl 5th London Reg’t. Probably had been in the T A before the War as he was in France by 4/11/1914. Commissioned 2/Lt 7/5/1915, later Capt London Regt & D L I. b 1894 Streatham.  1911C in Essex, an Insurance Agent for The Yorkshire Insurance Co. At one stage he lived at Lea House, Castleton and also Yokohama Japan. (DC 5/1/1918 ‘Engaged to Beatrice (Girlie) Dobb, only daughter of Mr & Mrs T Dobb of Brookfield Manor, Hathersage. Eldest son of Mr & Mrs F Charles of 2 Wharncliffe Road, Sheffield’).

CASWELL, George Henry

✟ ≠ 21274 Pte 1 Bn Northumberland Fusiliers. 3770 West Yorks. KIA 4/2/1916, age 17 and buried Dickebusch New Military Cemetery, Belgium. His grave records give his address as his father’s; 2 Northdale Road, Frizinghall, Bradford. According to his register of Soldiers effects, his sole legate was his mother Sarah. b1899 Cefn, Breconshire, son of CASWELL, Edgar William and Sarah Caswell above. 1911C living on Castleton Road, Hathersage. Brother of CASWELL, William Edgar, and CASWELL. James.
