GOULDER, William Vincent

ă 39603 3rd Fusiliers. Address on 1918 absent voters list; Bank Top, Hathersage.

b 3/4/1879 at Broughton, Sheffield to George and Elizabeth (née Wall) Goulder. George was the eldest of six sons and was a builder like his own father. Goulder Place and Goulder Terrace at Attercliffe Common, Sheffield,  were named after them. In 1911 Census, William is in Sheffield, himself a builder. He married twice. First to Lilly Brammar 10/5/1900. After her death in 1923 he married Clara Furniss 22/4/1925 at Hathersage. They had one son, Desmond who died in 2004 and his wife died in 2018. William, known as ‘Billy’ was a member of Hathersage British Legion and chairman of Hathersage Parish Council in 1934. He died 21/8/1934 aged 55 at ‘Belmont’, G H Lawrence’s house, while attending a bowling club party. At the time Hathersage Bowling Club were looking for a new ground, so in 1935, George H Lawrence had the present bowling green built in his honour, and where a bronze plaque commemorates the event.
