Enlisted August 1914; Pte 12/558 Sheffield City Bn, York & Lancs. Was in the Battle of the Somme 1/7/1916. Invalided home in 1917 with Trench Fever. Promoted Act Sgt, then 28/5/1918; Commissioned Duke of Wellingtons, 2/Lt West Riding Regt. At the end of the war he was training as an Air Pilot. b1893, Sheffield, son of Mr & Mrs George Luther Wood of Dore. Attended Silcoates School, Wakefield. Married Mary Susannah Catherine Gregory, only daughter of Mr & Mrs Walter Gregory of Hathersage on 10/7/1915 at Hathersage Wesleyan Chapel. Her brother John Darvill Gregory being best man. Worked in the family business of G. L. Wood & Co., Timber Merchants, Nursery Street, Sheffield. Died 12/1/1934 aged 41, and buried in Hathersage Churchyard.
