(née Laycock). While living at Totley, she was a nurse at Hathersage VAD Hospital. b1882 Sheffield, only daughter of W S Laycock of Oakbrook. Married in 1901 to Norman Kirkby Peace, who served as a Captain in WW1 and awarded the M.M. She died May 1918 age 36, leaving four children.

Remembered on Tyne Cot Memorial, age 28, panel 63-65. b 1889 Mytham Bridge, Derbyshire. 1891c living with his grandmother at ‘Pollycroft’ Outseats. 1911C a farm horseman working for Samuel Dore at Castle Gate, Eyam. Half-brother of Arthur Hickinson. Their mother was Clara Hickinson (later Clara Green).

Lt R.A.M.C. b1879 Johnstone, Renfrewshire. (SDT 6/1/1915; From St James, Grimsby when he married Dulcie Mary Travers of Moorland House, Hathersage, at Hathersage Parish Church on 5/1/1915).

b 1887 Hathersage.  1891C living on Baulk Lane, Hathersage, by 1911C; living in Buxton.  The son of Emily Appleyard; James Appleyard’s (above) sister. His nephew Sydney Hind was killed in the conflict.

Pte 98937  RAMC. He spent two years in France 16/4/1917 to 22/7/1919. b 1883 Hathersage. 1911C; living at Tinsley. Died 1921. Was he a possible victim of the Influenza epidemic? His father John Henry Andrews was the local Police Constable but seems to have left the village by 1885 (Derbyshire Advertiser 19/6/1885 p2). 1891 family living at Burton on Trent.

Of 3 Roslyn Crescent, Hathersage, joined Hathersage VAD Red Cross Hospital on 4/11/1918 aged 22, a ward Sister. Probably a professional nurse as she also served in the VAD 72 military hospital in France. (Daily Mirror 7/4/1919 front page picture) where she was, when she came 6^th as Britain’s most beautiful woman war-worker.

Enlisted 21/5/1915 declaring he was 19 when he was not quite 16! Pte 197 North Midlands Division Cycle Coy. He spent two months in France then discharged 31/7/1916 on medical grounds.

b 1899 Mapperley, Derbys.  1911C at Sawley, his father listed as John Wilson b 1860 ? a Hathersage  Police Pensioner. It is probable he was actually born John Priestley Littlewood, adopted by Thomas Wilson and Sarah Littlewood and took the name Wilson?

We are  struggling with Tom Lee. 4^th from right on WHW2W p 54 photo, known as Tom (but may have been Thomas Ernest?) He served again in the 1939/1945 war, in a non-combat role.) We came across a number of newspaper articles in the 1920/30’s that refer to T J Lee who seemed to be very involved with the Hope Valley Football League. He was in the village in 1931 when co-opted onto British Legion Benevolent Committee. He probably came to the village after WW1.

Pte 12/3594 Auckland Infantry Battalion, lived Kohekohe, Waiuku  New Zealand. (DC 26/6/1917; Wounded in France fighting for the New Zealand Forces). b 1894 Leam Farm, Eyam Woodlands. 1911C at Leam, son of Walter Cooper, a farmer b 1864 Padley, Hathersage.
