✟ Pte 1481 23rd Bn (Tyneside Scottish) Northumberland Fusiliers. Enlisted Newcastle. KIA 1/7/16 –Remembered on Thiepval Memorial. b 1882 Sheffield, in 1912 married Lena Ethel Tweedy at Hartlepool. Son of George Schofield, b 1846 Hathersage, a wire drawer, 1911C living at Wakefield.

HILL, William Lade. ✟ 18695 Pte 15 BN Royal Scots. Enlisted at Manchester on 24/12/1914 while living at The Green, Grindleford, giving his age as 30 years 9 months. (this conflicts with ages given on various census returns. He possibly lied as at 35 he may have been considered too old to join up). He joined his company at Edinburgh on 29/12/1914, eventually going to France on 8/1/1916 where he was KIA on 1/7/1916 and remembered on the Thiepval Memorial (pier 6D & 7D). His records show several misdemeanours including missing without reason several times, resulting in loss of pay and being confined to barracks. His N of K was his mother, but she had died on 18/5/1916 at Tedgness, Nether Padley, Grindleford, and is buried at Eyam, so his effects were sent to his sister Catherine. William was b1880 at Liscard, Cheshire, on census forms, (or Port Glasgow on his enlistment papers, probably so he could join a Scottish Regiment), and he lived most years in Cheshire, with his father William, who died in 1910, his mother Susan Cumming  (née  Lade, b Port Glasgow, Scotland) , and siblings, Catherine, Archibald and Isabella (all born in Cheshire). He gave his trade as an Agent.

Red Cross records refer to her as Lilian Benton a night nurse at Hathersage VAD hospital. She also lived at Cannon Fields, Hathersage and was also referred to as ‘Lillie’ Benton in the death notice of her husband (Sheff Independent 14/2/1917). Her daughter Annie Benton, and her sister Amy Beatrice Camm were also nurses there, and her sister-in-law Jessica Payne Benton, was a night nurse there.

(Known as Percy Higginson, before their father died, then as Percy Newton). Stoker First Class R.N. (SDT 27/4/1917;’Serving on HMS Broke, has two brothers fighting in France’). b1887 Leeds, Brother of Charles Newton/Higginson and Joseph Newton/Higginson, (and James Newton/Higginson, b1876 Hathersage, a police constable in Sheffield City Police, who did not serve in the forces),  sons of the late Thomas Francis (b1852 Hathersage, registered as ‘Higginson’ but baptised as ‘Newton’),) a Hackle Pin Grinder, and Martha Newton (née Barber, b 1854 Hathersage). In 1891C the family is called Higginson living in Leeds. In 1898 father Thomas Francis Newton dies in Sheffield, mother Martha does not remarry. The whole family appear on 1901C & 1911C in Sheffield, as ‘Newton’.

Brother of Charles Newton/Higginson and Percy Newton/Higginson (and James Newton/Higginson, b1876 Hathersage, a police constable in Sheffield City Police, who did not serve in the forces.) sons of the late Thomas Francis (b1852 Hathersage, registered as ‘Higginson’ but baptised as ‘Newton’), a Hackle Pin Grinder, and Martha Newton (née Barber, b 1854 Castleton). Lt., Cheshire Regt., in France from 20/12/1916. Capt., served in India, 63 Palmacollah L I, Indian Army after WW1. b 1898 Bovey Tracey, Devon, son of Rev Richard Wellington Menneers. Married May Rosamund Pawson of ‘Hillcrest’ Baslow on 18/9/1927 at Baslow. (1932, 1936 & 1941 Kelly’s living at ‘Ingleside’ Nether Padley).

WILSON, Thomas. Warrant Officer 2^nd CLASS. 2, 9, & 5 Bn K O Y L I. Probably already a serving soldier at outbreak of war as his medal record has him going to France 11/11/1914 as 6949 Cpl. b 1886 Sheffield, baptised Hathersage June 1897 along with his three siblings. Father Thomas Wilson b 1860 Sheffield, mother Mary Ann Schofield, b 1859 Hathersage to Hathersage parents, and died late 1896 at Sheffield.
