JESSOP, Arthur Noel

ă Pte 240481 16th Bn N & D, later Cpl 2/5 Bn until he was wounded and came back to England to join the 2/6 Bn. (DC 27/7/1915 ‘Cpl Jessop has previously been wounded’). Eventually promoted to Company Quarter Master Sgt.

b 1890 Sheffield. 1911C living at Birley Farm, Hathersage, a clerk. He was married during the war to Ellen Wilson, also known as Nellie, from Birley Farm.  In 1922 they lived at Westlowe Cottage (adjacent to Hill Farm at the end of Ranmoor Hill, and long since demolished), where son Peter was born.  In 1925 they lived at 1 Ranmoor Hill, where son Tony was born, who married Norah, daughter of Francis Wilkin.

He was secretary of Hathersage British Legion for many years and then chairman, and died tragically falling downstairs at ‘Ivylea’ Roslyn Crescent, Hathersage in 1952.
